The study of microorganisms , organisms of microscopic dimensions , is called microbiology . In fact , microbiology includes the studies of viruses , bacteria , fungi , algae and protozoa , i . e . , virology , bacteriology , mycology , phycology and protozoology . Since microorganisms ( = microbes ) are of immense importance to man because they are causativeagents of various diseases , source of various foods and medicines , and dispose wastes , hence , special techniques and methodology have been developed to study them . Some of the simpler experiments to isolate and cultivate them , and simple staining method .
